From Loss to Hope, Ulalo Revives Chipiliro’s Journey

Chipiliro Smiles again

Chipiliro Banda from Luwinga in Mzuzu has always believed that education would be his path to a better future. But life tested that belief in ways he never expected.

His mother passed away in 2016, a loss that shook the foundation of his family. Still, he pushed forward, determined to keep his dreams alive.

Then in 2023, while the 24 year old  was in Form 4, tragedy struck again. His elder brother the one who held the family together and supported his education died unexpectedly. Losing him felt like losing both guidance and security.

Suddenly, Chipiliro found himself at a crossroads with no one left to lean on.

Despite his grief, he worked tirelessly through his examinations and was later selected to study BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences at Mzuzu University.

It should have been a moment of pure joy the beginning of the future he had always imagined. But with no family support left, the excitement quickly faded. His future felt brutally uncertain.

For a moment, everything he had worked for seemed to be slipping away.

But through Ulalo’s Khwima Project, hope found its way back into his life.

“This support allowed me to register, settle, and continue with my education,” Chipiliro says with quiet determination. “I am still standing because someone believed in my dream.”

Today, Chipiliro walks through Mzuni with purpose, gratitude, and a renewed belief in his future.

Ulalo didn’t just support his education  they helped him reclaim the dream he once feared losing, truly living out its vision of empowering young people so they have the means to achieve greatness.
