Organic Fertilizer Training for Schools and Communities in Mzimba North
From raw materials to rich organic fertilizer, the Biochar process begins here
In Mzimba North, teachers and community members from 12 schools are learning how to transform their soil and gardens through organic fertilizer production.
This initiative, led by Ulalo, aims to boost soil fertility, encourage sustainable food production, and empower Schools to grow food the natural way.
The training is focusing on Biochar Terra Preta, a proven technique that enriches soil and supports school-based agricultural production under Ulalo’s School Meals Program.
Over the course of the sessions, participants are gaining hands on skills to cultivate food sustainably, ensuring long term benefits for both their schools and the wider community.
Participants pack the organic fertilizer in the final stage of the process.
Laston Mwale, Secretary of the School Meals Committee at Maleghele Primary School in Mzimba, shared his thoughts.
“This training is very timely for our school. We now understand how to produce and use organic fertilizers to grow food for our children and the community.”
Oscar Kawonga, School Meals Officer at Ulalo, highlighted the program’s wider impact of the innitiative.
“Through these trainings, we are not only improving soil fertility but also empowering communities to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. This will have lasting benefits for food security and school-based gardens in the region.” Said Kawonga.
The School Meals Program is being implemented in Mzimba and Nkhatabay Districts in partnership with Chancen Durch Building Germany.
With this training, Ulalo is planting seeds for a greener, healthier, and more self-sufficient future in Malawian schools and communities.
