More Than a Performance

How BEFIT is Building Confident Learners and Brighter Futures

Leaners showing the numerical skills they have developed through the program

As learners took to the stage with confidence, energy, and excitement, it was difficult to imagine that many of them once struggled to participate in class or express themselves in front of others. Through songs, drama, dances, poems, and physical BEFIT demonstrations, the learners were not just entertaining the audience, they were telling a story of growth, confidence, and transformation.

Through drama, learners highlighted the negative impact of tablet theft on education

The Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) Open Day offered a glimpse into how education can change lives when learners are given the right support. Parents, teachers, School Attendance Committee members, education officials, and community members watched proudly as children showcased talents and skills that have been nurtured through the program.

For many parents, the most rewarding outcome has been seeing their children become more confident. Among them was Rosalyn Kangawa, who attended the Open Day in Mzuzu and could not hide her appreciation for the program’s impact.

"I have seen a great improvement in my child's communication skills and ability to express herself confidently. I am grateful for the positive results the program has brought not only to my child but to many learners." She said.

Her testimony reflects the experiences of many families whose children are now participating more actively in school and engaging confidently with others. What was once a challenge for some learners has become a strength, opening doors to better learning experiences and brighter aspirations.

Education leaders also acknowledged the positive changes taking place in schools implementing the program. The Director of Education and Sports for Likoma District commended BEFIT for its continued efforts in improving learner attendance and academic performance. Similar sentiments were shared by Mzuzu Chief Education Officer Joseph Lusale, who noted that schools have recorded increased attendance and that learners are demonstrating greater confidence, as evidenced by their performances during the Open Day.

When leadership recognizes hard work, excellence thrives

Beyond showcasing achievements, the events also inspired learners to dream bigger. A special career inspiration session brought together professionals from different fields who shared their personal journeys and encouraged learners to work hard in school. For many children, it was an opportunity to see what is possible when education is embraced and aspirations are pursued with determination.

Career guidance shaped aspirations and transformed learner’s perspective on their future

The Open Days were designed to bring together stakeholders and celebrate the progress learners are making through the BEFIT program. The events were held on 28 May at Likoma Community Grounds in Likoma District and on 29 May at Karonga Demonstration Primary School in Karonga and St. Faustina Primary School in Mzuzu.

As the performances ended, one message remained clear: BEFIT is doing more than improving literacy and numeracy skills. It is helping learners find their voice, believe in their potential, and build the confidence needed to shape their futures.

Ulalo remains committed to supporting its partners in ensuring that every learner develops strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Through collaboration with government, schools, communities, and development partners, the organization continues to contribute to a future where every child has the opportunity to learn, thrive, and succeed.
